How Long Do Cosmetics Really Last
How long do cosmetics really last
Most cosmetic products have a visible expiry date, others have a symbol of a jar with an open lid, number and letter. This indicates that the products expiry date only applies once the seal is removed but how long do cosmetics really last?
Follow my guide for a healthy spot free beauty routine...
Foundation - 12 - 18 months depending on the ingredients
A water based foundation will last 12 months where as an oil based foundation can last up to 18 months.
If your foundation has separated into layers or lightened in color this is a great indication that it is time to invest in a new one.
Remember UV rays can destroy preservatives so keep make-up away from sunlight to prolong its shelf life.
Lipstick and Lip Gloss - 1 - 2 years
Lipsticks can last up to 2 years where as a gloss will expire after a year.
If your lipstick becomes noticeably dry or your gloss appears to be extra sticky, this is an indication they have past their expiry date.
Face Powder. Blusher. Eyeshadow - 2 years
Expired powders tend to be more dry and flaky in appearance.
I would recommend investing in a cosmetic sanitizer or brush shampoo. It is vital to maintain the condition of your brushes and tools in the prevention of bacteria and to minimize the risk of breakouts. Ensure that your make-up tools are cleaned on a regular basis.
Fragrance - 8-10 years
Bright lights make perfumes oxidize faster so ensure they are stored in a cool dark place.
Fragrances which lighten in color or differ in smell have definitely expired.
Nail Polish - 1-2 years depending on the quality
Expired polish will separate into two layers, be noticeably gloopy and, refuse to blend after a good shake.
Investing in a nail polish thinner is a great and cheap way of increasing the longevity of your nail enamel.
Lotion - 2 years
A change in color or scent is a sure sign your lotion should be thrown.
Pump dispensers are less prone to airborne bacteria so opt for this particular variety over jar containers.
Eyeliner - up to 2 years
Ensure your eyeliner is sharpened regularly to prolong its shelf life.
Mascara - 3 months
As soon as your mascara becomes noticeably clumpy or starts to produce a strange odor toss it out.
Remember to never share mascara. This is a guaranteed way to spread germs and bacteria and should be regularly replaced to prevent contamination and infection.
