Nail Intelligence: Nail Diseases and Disorders

Nail diseases contraindicate manicure. Although nail disorders do not usually create a problem and can be adapted during treatment and improved with the appropriate home care advice, nail diseases are a result of bacterial, fungal and viral infections of the nail and surrounding skin and therefore require GP referral for medical treatment.

The most common nail disease and one I personally have vast experience of is Paronychia.
Paronychia typically begins as a torn or loss of cuticle. Once bacteria is able to enter the 'live' tissue behind the nail fold the area begins to swell resulting in pus around the nail border and a throbbing sensation.
An advanced condition which involves infection by a fungus as well as bacteria can easily be developed by individuals who have their hands in and out of water on a regular basis.

Problem Solver: As Paronychia is a contraindication to manicure and pedicure procedures your nail technician or beautician should refer you to your doctor who will prescribe an anti-fungal ointment and antibiotics to clear the infection.
This condition can also be prevented by ensuring hands are kept dry and the cuticles soft and pliable.
