The Lash Effect

The lash effect

False eyelashes instantly change your look by enhancing your natural lashes. Providing thickness and definition, this versatile beauty product is essential in creating a glamorous statement effect.

Usually handmade from natural hair or lightweight, synthetic fibres, false lashes are available in an array of vibrant colours, lengths and styles. From winged glitter swarovski to dazzling feathered inspired falsies, there is a range to suit all tastes and occasions.

Pre-shaped strips can be attached to the edge of the eyelid by a relatively weak, latex-based adhesive. Although safe, contra-indications are often present when false eyelashes are involved. You should avoid applying this particular product if:

You have very sensitive eyes
The eye or surrounding skin is infected
There is any dry or flaking skin present around the eye area
The eyelid is swollen or inflamed
You have previously experienced an allergic reaction to lash adhesive

Once you have ensured no contra-indications are present you can begin the tricky application!

Temporary lashes are usually applied to the eyelids as complete strips however, depending on your skill and requirements, the base can easily be cut down in to shorter sections.

You should allow an extra 10 minutes for any make-up routine involving the application of strip lashes and ensure that they are always applied at the end of your cosmetics procedure. This simply prevents them from requiring washing as often and helps them to last longer.
A great tip is to apply eyeliner before false lash application. This conceals the base of the strip providing a more natural look.

Application

For the application of false eyelashes you will need:

Your chosen set of false eyelashes
A tube of adhesive
A pair of clean manual tweezers
A clean plastic palette
A clean mascara brush
Tissues
A hand mirror
I would also recommend a clean eye bath in case of any accidents

Step 1: Measure the lash strip against the edge of the eyelid and shorten where required.
Avoid removing shorter lashes from the inner edge as these are shaped specifically to fit comfortably near the nose

Step 2: If your lashes are new they will be a lot easier to apply once made more pliable. This can be done by moulding the strip in to a half moon shape to fit the eyelid.

Step 3: A great tip is to place the eyelashes on a clean tissue facing away from you. This simply makes using your tweezers to pick them up at a right angle a lot easier!

Step 4: Apply a very small amount of adhesive to a clean palette.

Step 5: Pick up one set of eyelashes in the centre of the strip on the lash side with your tweezers.

Step 6: It is important to ensure that a fine line of adhesive is distributed evenly. This can be done by stroking the base of your lashes through the adhesive until its length is equally covered.
Always avoid getting any excess adhesive on to the lashes.

Step 7: To ensure a good fit close to the base of your natural lashes, use your free hand to lift the skin of the eyelid from beneath the brow.

Step 8: It is important to make sure that the lashes follow the direction of the natural hair growth. This can be achieved by lining up the tweezers with the centre of the eyelid and pressing gently in to place.

Step 9: Ensure that both the inner and outer corners of the strip are secure. Avoid getting excess adhesive on the tweezers and natural lashes when performing this particular step.

Step 10: Your lashes should be secure after 2 minutes. Fully open your eye and using clean tweezers, gently press the false and natural lashes together.

Step 11: False and natural lashes can be blended together by using a clean mascara brush.
For a more natural looking blend complete the application by adding a coat of your normal mascara.

If your lashes do not feel right after the first application don't be afraid to start again. It is essential to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible to prevent any unwanted irritation of the eye area.
If you are wearing falsies on a regular basis you may also want to consider purchasing Duo Lash glue. It can be pricey but it is definitely worth the investment as not only is it stronger but waterproof and, long lasting.
