The Facts About Remedial Camouflage Make-up

From scars and burns, to birth marks and pigmentation disorders, for some us imperfections go a little deeper than the average spot or blemish.
Although severe, these skin conditions are more than treatable with the skillful use of remedial camouflage make-up and can easily be concealed and disguised with the application of a specialized camouflage cream underneath normal foundation.
When selecting camouflage make-up it is vital that the product has the following qualities:

  • Provides a good long lasting coverage
  • Is waterproof
  • Contains ingredients such as titanium dioxide to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays
  • Has a good colour range
  • Is hypo-allergenic
I would highly recommend a visit to a beautician or make-up artist who has undertaken a specialized course in remedial make-up. Professionals in this particular field will not only teach clients how to apply camouflage make-up quickly and effectively, but ensure that they are using the correct products for their individual condition.
There are however, a few tips to remember when it comes to achieving satisfactory results yourself:

  • The application of remedial camouflage cosmetics should match as closely to the skin surrounding the blemish as possible. Finding the perfect shade to disguise your imperfection can be as simple as applying a second shade over the first initial camouflage.
  • Always ensure that skin is thoroughly cleansed and grease free. It is important to take into consideration that any trace of moisture on the skin's surface will repel camouflage cream and therefore, make application extremely difficult. To prevent this, simply avoid applying moisturizing products to the treated area.
  • A white colour is to be applied prior to a shade specifically mixed to match the clients skin tone when camouflaging the deep colours of a tattoo. A green base can also be used on any predominantly red marks before adding colour.
  • Camouflage creams should always be applied sparingly using a layering technique. It is important to remember that burns and scar tissue are non-absorbent and therefore, creams may slip when applied to these particular conditions.
  • Never rub cream on to the blemish. Instead, gently press the product on to the treated area until the imperfection or discolouration has disappeared. It is also vital to ensure that any colour is thoroughly blended into the surrounding skin to prevent any obvious demarcation lines and, to achieve a more natural finish.
  • A generous amount of specialized fixing powder should always be applied over the treated area and left for ten minutes to allow the camouflage cream to set. Any remaining excess trace of powder can then be removed by using a soft powder brush.
  • Although there is no need to adjust any further application of make-up, special care should always be taken when applying your normal foundation. Not only should application be of a gentle nature, but any rubbing should be minimized as much as possible to prevent disturbing the camouflage cream.
Specialist removing creams are available from the products manufacturer which should be gently massaged into the treated area until the cream begins to dissolve. Once all excess traces have been removed thoroughly, the face or area may then be cleansed as normal.
