Essential Tips For Staying Safe & Protected In The Sun
Over exposure to the sun can not only put you at risk of skin cancer, but have damaging effects in the form of premature ageing, dark spots and uneven skin texture.
With the United Kingdom currently experiencing a rare but much needed heat wave, we take a look at the essential tips for keeping safe and protected during times of extreme heat.
Avoid
Try to avoid sunbathing between 11 am and 3 pm when ultraviolet rays are at their strongest.
Protect
Always select a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. These particular products are often labeled as broad-spectrum and provide more adequate protection in comparison to the majority of popular sunscreens.
Sun Protection Factor
UVB rays are not only responsible for sunburn but are known to be the major cause of skin cancer in people with fair skin.
Always opt for an SPF of 15-30 depending on your skin type and length of sun exposure. Individuals working outdoors and those of a pale or fair nature will require the frequent application of a higher SPF. It is also vital to remember that the sun is capable of penetrating through loosely woven and wet clothing, so ensure that sunscreen is worn even when covered.
Application
Our face and hands are at high risk of cancer so it is important to apply sunscreen liberally to these particular areas. Opt for the equivalent of one teaspoon to the face and at least one ounce (a shot glass) to the rest of your body.
Sensitivity
A total sunblock should always be applied to areas of sensitive skin. To reduce irritation simply opt for a cream-based product and avoid sunscreens containing tretinoin. This includes:
- Retin - A
- Stieva - A
- Retisol - A
- Rejuva - A
- Renova
- Vitamin A acid which all having a drying effect.
Water Resistant
From water to concrete, UVA rays are reflected from all light surfaces, increasing the risk of sunburn dramatically.
Waterproof and water resistant sunscreens are not only great for those of a sporty nature, but perfect for swimming and should be applied twenty minutes prior to entering water to allow the product to bond with the skin. Always be sure to reapply once out of the water.
Sunglasses
UVA rays not only speed up the ageing process but damage the protein fibres which make skin firm and supple. Although the majority of sunscreens can be too harsh to apply to the delicate eye area, opting for sunglasses containing 100% UV-blocking lenses will ensure that this extremely sensitive area is kept protected.
Hydration
Over exposure to the sun can have serious life threatening repercussions in the form of:
Dehydration - Due the drying effect the sun has, dehydration is a common problem during times of extreme heat.
Dehydration is defined as the excessive loss of body water. By the time you experience the sensation of thirst you are already dehydrated. Water re-hydrates the body, without the correct intake, the performance of the majority of the human body is effected and nearly all systems are unable to function effectively.
Heat exhaustion - The sun can raise the body'd temperature to the point of heat exhaustion, a condition which combines an increase in the body's core temperature with dehydration and if left untreated, can lead to a life threatening condition known as heat stroke.
I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping thoroughly hydrated during times of extreme heat. It is not only essential to drink plenty of water, but consider increasing your fruit and vege intake to provide your body with an alternative added form of water.
I'm so sorry for the mix of font size during this post but for some reason it seems impossible to keep it all the same!! Bare with me guys, I will try and get it all of a readable font asap x
