The functional food fad that can fight the flab

Food for thought...
Layering ingredients inside a glass jar resembles one of the few functional food fads that can fight the flab and fool fussy eaters...

Although 'layering your lunch' may seem like a silly solution to storing a simple salad, this cleaver and convenient concoction can not only reduce your risk of reaching for the 'wrong' food sources at work - its preprepared properties make it the perfect 'healthy lunch' for people with a hectic lifestyle - but it can also make food fun for fussy eaters - layering various vibrant ingredients inside a glass jar will instantly ignite interest in the foods that your youngsters 'fear'.

Here's how to make the most of this fun and functional food fad:

1. Choose your concoction.
Select and slice a variety of fruits, vegetables and/or lean meat - think tomatoes, chicken and cucumber for a simple salad, and strawberries, blueberries and apple for a fruit salad - as well as your desired dressing i.e.reduced fat salad cream for a simple salad, and natural yogurt for a fruit salad.

2. Layer it up!
With your desired dressing situated at the base of the jar, start to 'layer up' your ingredients by selecting the heaviest ingredients first, and finishing with the lightest.

3. Secure and store.
Seal and secure the lid of your salad (opting for a jar with an air tight top will preserve your produce perfectly) and store in the fridge.

4. Serve.
Shake your salad in order to disperse the dressing before serving in a bowl - enjoy!

Top tip: although your layered lunch will last for up to several days when sealed securely and stored in the fridge, specific ingredients such as fish and eggs should only be added on the day of consumption in order to prevent food poisoning.
