Nailing It: How To Handle Brittle Nails

Brittle nails is a common, yet unsightly condition which not only forces the nail plate to become thick, hard and inflexible, but prone to breaks and cracks.

Although often associated with those of a more mature nature, brittle nails aren't necessarily the result of the natural moisture loss caused by the ageing process. In fact, something as simple as the overuse of nail strengtheners can easily create this common problem.
Due to these particular products containing ingredients specifically formulated to harden the nail plate, continued use once the desired effect has been achieved will force nails to become so hard, that they become brittle. So, how exactly should this condition be managed? Simple...

A combination of regular professional manicures, and the application of cuticle and hand cream will prove to be particularly beneficial in the improvement of brittle nails. Taking basic precautions such as ensuring that nails are kept short to avoid damage (mechanical damage will cause the free edge of brittle nails to snap and shatter,) and avoiding the use of clippers and scissors which will only shatter and split the nail plate, will also help to minimize the unwanted effects created by this particular condition.

Remember, the majority of problems associated with the worsening of brittle nails is caused by clients cutting the free edge (tip of the nail plate) themselves. A great tip is to use real, or synthetic emery boards as an alternative to scissors in order to reduce the length of brittle nails.
