Infections of the eye and surrounding area, for example, conjunctivitis, are more than often the result of the spread of bacteria from the nose and mouth. 
To ensure that cross-infection is avoided, simply wash hands thoroughly after touching the face and always remember to never share face cloths, mascara or towels with others.
