Nailing It: What Causes White Spots On Nails?

Did you know that white spots on the nail plate are formed as a result of minor injury?
Although visible spots present on every nail may indicate a calcium deficiency, failing to protect nails with the adequate care they require is more than often the main cause of this common condition.

Referred to as Leuconychia, white spots are formed after the base of the nail is injured. The result? A small air pocket is created between the nail plate and nail bed which in effect, produces a white spot once it becomes trapped between the layers of the cells, but don't panic! The spots are not only harmless but will naturally disappear once the nail begins to grow.
To avoid this condition completely, simply take more care of your nails and resist the urge to use them as tools!
