The Effects Of Vitamin Deficiency On The Skin
Vitamin deficiency and the skin
The skin is one of the largest, most complex hard working organs of the human body.
From glands and cells to specialized receptors, it is full of an array of components continuously working together to maintain optimum health and provide a glowing, radiant complexion. However, what happens when we lack the necessary nutrients required to achieve beautifully flawless skin? Over the next few days I will be explaining the importance of vitamins and minerals and the effects a deficiency of these essential nutrients has on our skin.
Today we take a look at the effects on the skin through vitamin deficiency.
Vitamin A
One of the jobs of Vitamin A is to regulate the size and function of the sebaceous glands. A lack of this particular vitamin will cause skin to become visibly dry and flaky.
Vitamin B
A lack of one or more of this vitamin group will result in irritated, red cracks at the corner of the mouth as well as tiny lines in the surrounding area of skin. The transportation of oxygen to the cells and the efficiency of waste removal is also effected.
Vitamin C
Collagen fibres slow down causing early signs of wrinkles and premature aging when a lack of Vitamin C is present. A deficiency in this particular vitamin forces the tiny capillaries that supply nutrients to the skin to become dilated and fragile, slowing the healing process and allowing the skin to be more susceptible to bruising.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is essential for healthy looking skin. A deficiency in this particular vitamin will cause dry, rough, tired looking skin which heals slowly and bruises easily. Free radicals in the form of smoking, pollution and UV light are also free to cause damage when Vitamin E intake is reduced.
