Nail Enamel Allergies
With the average person touching their face a whopping 200 times a day, it is easy to see how a simple manicure can result in a nasty case of periorbital dermatitis - a rash around the eyelids.
Although the nail plates are dead and can only be affected by nail enamel to an extent, it is impossible for them to suffer an allergic reaction.
Nail enamel allergies are much more common in individuals with sensitive skin as a result of the affected area coming in to contact with the enamels offending ingredient. Typically, an allergic reaction is likely to appear on the face or neck in the form of dermatitis and has the following characteristics:
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- Itchiness
- Blistering at the site of contact
- Weeping
- Dryness
- Flaking of the skin
If an adverse reaction occurs it is vital to remove the product responsible immediately and apply a cooling, soothing antiseptic lotion to the affected area. Medical advice should always be sought if the symptoms continue to persist.
