The Main Causes Of Chipping And Peeling Nail Enamel

Have you ever applied your favorite nail enamel only to find your efforts completely ruined by unwanted chipping and peeling?
There are numerous reasons why the effects of nail enamel application may not last as long as expected. From inadequate nail preparation and minimal time and care spent on the initial application, to the texture of the enamel used, your hard work can easily be destroyed once you fail to care for your nails in the appropriate way.
Avoiding the causes on my lists of main culprits responsible for the unsightly chipping and peeling of enamel will ensure that your talons are kept painted and polished to perfection.

Causes of chipping:
  • A base-coat has not been applied.
  • The enamel has been thinned with too much solvent.
  • A flaking condition of the nail plate is present.
  • There is a build up of grease on the nail plate underneath the nail enamel.
  • The nail enamel has been 'quick dried' instead of left to dry naturally.

Causes of peeling:
  • The nail enamel is too thick.
  • A top-coat has not been applied.
  • There is a build up of grease on the nail plate underneath the nail enamel.
  • An insufficient amount of time has been left between each application of enamel, preventing the individual coats from completely drying prior to the next application.

  1. Loved this post. I have a really oily nail bed, so my nails chip super quick.

  2. Going for regular manicures will also help to solve the above problems as the nail technician will remove the build up of skin you get on the nail plate. To remove oil from the nail plate wipe with nail varnish remover then rinse the hands before applying base coat.

    1. Thanks for the comment :) I often find that nail enamel remover is a little drying for the natural nail so I prefer using damp cotton wool as an alternative. Make sure that your nails are completely dry and free from traces of oil before your base coat application guys x
