Fast Facts: Common Adverse Reactions To Artificial Nails
Due to the overexposure of the chemicals and irritating substances used during the application process of an artificial nail structure, the risk of an adverse reaction is increased dramatically.
Irritation in the form of itching, redness and overly sore or sensitive skin, nails and cuticles are all signs that an allergic response may be evident.
Today we take a look at a selection of common adverse reactions which may appear following the application of artificial nail extensions.
Thinning: Excessive filing and buffing during the preparation of an artificial nail structure can cause the natural nail plate to thin.
Allergy: Due to the variety of chemicals and irritating substances used during the process of artificial nail systems, clients may suffer an adverse reaction.
Those of a hypersensitive nature hold a higher risk of allergy due to the fact that excessively sensitive skin is more susceptible to irritation.
Infection: Inadequate hygiene procedures and incorrect home care can both lead to bacterial and fungal infections of the nail, cuticles and, surrounding area.
Softening: A good nail technician will ensure that prolonged exposure to harsh products such as nail primer is minimised as much as possible. Failing to do so will result in the softening of the natural nail plate.
Physical Damage: The application of an artificial nail structure may result in physical damage to the natural nail plate, nail bed or cuticle if performed inadequately. As a result, bruising, ridges in the nail plate and, skin damage to the cuticles and nail walls will be noticeably visible.
Discolouration: It is important to take into consideration that some artificial nail systems are sensitive to UV light. Sunbed treatments in particular can result in a yellow discolouration of the nail.
Although it is essential for your nail technician to wear protective gloves and, ensure that all relevant health and safety procedures are followed to reduce the risk of over exposure, the offending product should be discontinued immediately should an adverse reaction occur. Alternatively, I would strongly advise clients to avoid wearing nail extensions until the problem subsides.
