Nailing It: Excess Cuticle

Do you suffer from excess cuticle?
Pterygium is an unattractive nail disorder guaranteed to see even the most confident of clients go to great lengths in order to hide and disguise their talons.

Although the cuticles primary purpose is to protect the matrix (the only 'living' part of the nail) an excessive amount forces a thick hardened growth of dry cuticle to stick to the nail plate as it grows. But don't panic! As serious as it may sound, this relatively common condition can easily be treated and prevented by regular professional manicures. With the application of oil or paraffin wax, cuticles can be softened and successfully removed through a combination of using a cuticle pusher (to gently push back) and cuticle nippers to remove any excess traces.

However, in extreme cases, Pterygium will cover the entire nail plate in cuticle skin. Although regular manicures will help to prevent such an advanced condition occuring, medical treatment is required in the removal of extreme excess cuticle.
