Pigmented Moles: When To Seek Medical Advice
Its no secret that the incidence of skin cancer is on the increase, but how much do we really know about pigmented moles and when exactly should medical advice be sought?
Over-exposure to strong ultraviolet rays is one of the main causes of skin cancer and is particularly high in young people of a fair nature who are most susceptible to moles. It should therefore come as no surprise when I tell you that the damaging effects of sunlight can also force harmless pigmented moles to become malignant.
Although this common skin condition usually develops from childhood, care should be taken to check any existing moles on a regular basis and medical advice sought should any of the following changes occur in appearance:
- Pigmentation deepens
- You experience any pain, tenderness or itching
- You notice an increase in size
- The defined edge of the mole begins to break
- You notice any signs of inflammation surrounding the mole
- A formation of crust or bleeding occurs
- New, tiny moles develop around the borders of an existing mole
