Food for thought: celebrity 'slimming secrets' are stupid and unsustainable

In order to oust obesity, we must first eliminate uneducated examples of unsustainable food swaps...

Although it may be tempting to resort to the ridiculous recipes that resemble sensible but unsustainable food swaps - the food swaps that are often purposely promoted by photo shopped 'celebrities' in an attempt to convince us that their slender silhouette stems from strategic feasting on rabbit food - the 'carby calories' found in food sources such as a bread based bun do not need to be ditched from our daily diet in order for us to successfully drop a dress size.

In fact, contrary to popular belief, the consumption of carbohydrates - a mandatory macronutrient that provides four calories per gram (less than half of the calories found in one gram of fat) - does not resemble the core culprit responsible for our failure to fight the flab - failing to eliminate an overconsumption of excess energy, be it from carbohydrates, fat, protein and/or alcohol, via exercise and physical activity does.

 Instead of intensifying your insecurities by believing the 'slimming secrets' behind the body of money fuelled 'celebrities' with no (professional) nutritional background, take a moment to remember that we don't have to dedicate our days to a dangerous caloric deficit, ditch specific food sources from our diet or deprive ourselves of our favourite foods in order to oust an accumulation of additional weight, but we do need to master the meaning of moderation, participate in physical activity and sustain sensible food swaps that are sustainable and satisfying (this most definitely does not include using ''large lettuce leaves to make a low-calorie and naturally gluten-free alternative to a burger bun'') on a physical and psychological scale in order to create the lifestyle changes that lead to long-term weight loss.

Top tip: the 'perfect' physique portrayed by the warped world of celebrity weight loss often stems from one or all of the following things:

  • Photoshop - a flawless figure can be achieved by anyone with access to a computer!
  • A combination of a dangerous caloric deficit and an extreme exercise regime - neither can be sustained over a prolonged period of time without the worry of serious health complications and additional weight gain when returning to a realistic eating and exercise routine.
  • Unlimited access to celebrity chefs and top personal trainers - a convenient combination that would ensure that the elimination of excess weight is an easy and effective experience for even the most unmotivated (and uneducated!) of minds.
