Make food fun with food related play

Top tip: make food fun for fussy eaters by encouraging the participation in food related play.

Why: fun food related play not only encourages children to enjoy an activity that aids and strengthens the key stages of child development - think strengthened fine motor skills from picking up a paintbrush, improved intellectual skills from using their imagination and stronger social skills when participating in play with their peers - it also proves to be particularly beneficial for parents who are prone to battling the problematic pickiness that's exaggerated by fussy eating - troublesome tots are much more likely to try new tastes and textures if unfamiliar foods are initially introduced in a fun form, be it through creative crafts that they can't consume (a Christmas wreath made from farfalle pasta pieces) or an edible character that they've helped to create (an orange owl).

How: although food related play resembles an activity that can be customized to compliment both the characteristics of children and the personal preferences of parents, I chose to create a Christmas wreath made from farfalle pasta pieces, green and gold glitter and a basic bow - all of which can be purchased at a relatively cheap and reasonable price from a selection of supermarkets and craft stores.

Final thought: little'uns love the sensory stimulation that stems from sight, sound, taste and touch - use it to your advantage by combining creative crafts, with child friendly cookery classes and/or appealing cuisine.
