Make fitness fun with a strenuous step session

Sweating it out with a strenuous step session may see us struggling to sustain stamina, but incorporating this tough training into our weekly workouts can work wonders for more than just our waistline.

Here are my top three reasons why we should be taking the stairs...

1. It makes fitness fun.
Whether it's small steps or speedy sprints, tackling the tough terrain of a set of stairs - be it concrete or carpet - can not only maintain a motivated mind by ensuring that our brain doesn't get bored of the repetitive regime that resembles steady state cardio, but force us to inject a little fun into fitness by mixing up our regular routine with an intense and interesting workout.

2. It fights the flab whilst helping our health and heart.
Aside from eliminating the excess energy that contributes to a wider waistline, a strenuous step session can also benefit our body by boosting our health and heart when performed on a regular basis - it increases the strength and size of our heart, boosts our blood circulation and strengthens our respiratory muscles to name but a very few health enhancing effects.

3. It's suitable for all fitness levels.
Although the tough training session that stems from tackling the stairs may test our strength and stamina, this particular type of training can still be tailored to compliment our current capabilities - we can increase (speedy step sprints) or decrease (slow, small steps) the intensity of a step session to suit our physical strength and stamina and ensure that we execute a safe and sustainable exercise session.

Top tip: expecting to execute an extreme exercise regime on a regular basis will not only increase your risk of injury, but leave you susceptible to physical and psychological exhaustion. Don't be afraid to start slow by building up your strength and stamina over a prolonged period - particularly if you're new to physical activity and/or struggle with strenuous training sessions - or stop if you experience any exercise induced discomfort.
