Weight loss & water: how fluid can fight the flab

Food for thought: thirst is triggered at the same time as hunger.

Although a reoccurring rumble may stem from an unsatisfied stomach, an overwhelming craving for calories can also be driven by dehydration.

In fact, failing to fuel our body and brain with an adequate intake of fluid can not only increase the incidence of mistaking our thirst mechanism for hunger - a feeling that can be felt when we're as little as 2% dehydrated - but leave us likely to over consume the calories that we're trying to cut - we nibble on unnecessary nutrition without realising that we're just desperate for a drink.

Instead of instantly turning to a tasty treat in an attempt to tame a (seemingly) troublesome tummy, try guzzling a glass of water before waiting to see if the 'hunger' sensation subsides. Although your body and brain may well be craving calories - particularly if you're prone to skipping substantial snacks and meals and/or struggling to sustain a dangerous caloric deficit - many dieters are susceptible to consuming unnecessary calories simply because they find it difficult to differentiate the need for fluid, from the need for food...

Top tip: water is a natural appetite suppressant (and a wonderful weight loss tool!) that can aid your fight against the flab by filling you up when sipped before snacks and meals - this leaves you less likely to overeat, and more able to control your caloric consumption.
