Kids health:how to satisfy bothersome bellies on a budget

Bargain buy...

What: x2 chicken chargrills - £0.99p from Aldi.

Why: if you're struggling to satisfy bothersome bellies on a budget, these chargrilled chicken burgers will not only make a moreish meal that's packed with protein-rich properties - a mandatory macronutrient that can cause stunted growth in children who consume an inadequate intake over a prolonged period - but reduce your youngster's risk of reaching for the sugary sauces that sabotage their silhouette - as the burgers are already sensibly seasoned (think black pepper and parsley) and full of flavour, there is no need to pile on processed products such as salad cream and tomato ketchup.

Make a meal of it by: serving with homemade sweet potato chips or seasoned potato wedges (both cooked in the oven using frylight spray), a wholemeal (brown) bun and a sneaky salad - the latter can be sliced into shapes (particularly lettuce) and slipped inside the bun if your youngster isn't keen on a plate of prominent pieces of fruit and vegetables.

What to watch: salt.
Although this delicious dish may tickle your tot's taste buds, it can also contain a substantial amount of salt - particularly when paired with a breaded bun. In order to ensure that your youngster doesn't over consume one of the core culprits responsible for contributing to hypertension (in later life), keep servings to one burger per meal and remember that the daily recommended salt intake for minors is as follows:

  • Under 12 months: less than 1g of salt - a baby's kidneys cannot cope with much salt.
  • 1-3 years: 2g salt (0.8g sodium).
  • 4-6 years: 3g salt (1.2g sodium).
  • 7-10 years: 5g salt (2g sodium).
  • 11+ years: 6g salt (2.4g sodium).
