Nailing It: When to avoid squoval nails

Squoval shaped talons may create a softer and more attractive alternative to a squared off free edge, but this statement shape doesn't suit everyone.

Those prone to short, wide-bodied and fan shaped nails will not only emphasize the shortness associated with their natural nail shape by opting for a squoval tip, they will also force their fingers to appear stubby.

If you find yourself susceptible to a wide or fan shaped nail plate, transforming your talons into an oval shape will eliminate the bulk of the nail in order to create a lighter, more delicate appearance. This particular shape will also have a flattering and feminine affect on shorter nails, and lengthen the fingers of small hands.

Top tip: Filing your nails into an oval shape will force the natural nail plate to weaken to an extent - the sides of the nail provide the nail plate with the strength and support it requires to withstand damage and breakage. If you're prone to an excessively weak or fragile nail plate, this will need to be taken into consideration and a more suitable nail shape chosen.
