Skincare Tip: The Damaging Effects of Soap and Water

Opting for traditional soap and water as part of your skincare regime may create the illusion of 'clean' skin, but did you know that this simple action could prove lethal for your complexion?

Although skin of a greasy nature may be able to tolerate this particular method of cleansing without suffering any unsightly effects, the application of soap and water to skin which is balanced, or prone to dryness can in fact have damaging consequences. Why? Simple.

Soap is a strong detergent with an alkaline PH which acts by stripping the skin of grease, and removing its protective covering. As skin of a balanced, or dry nature is unable to produce enough sebum (the skin's natural lubricant) in order to restore the disrupted acid mantle soap creates, it will not only develop a tight, parched and flaky texture, but suffer severe irritation in the form of sore inflammation.

Despite the fact that soap and water is unsuitable for the face, there is an abundance of products and formulas available which are guaranteed to provide the 'clean' feeling washing creates. Simply opting for a wash, bar or gel as opposed to harsh soap and water, will not only provide the clean feeling so many of us crave, but reduce the risk of dehydration and unsightly irritation.
